We wish all our dads/fathers the best Fathers Day. Bless all of you who have filled this spot in our lives.
See you next week.
I am a father. I am raising an eleven year old son and a thirteen year old daughter in partnership with my wife who works full time. In their early years, I parented as much or more of the time as my wife. I also have a daughter who was born when I was only 17 years old. She recently gave birth to a son so I have now become a grandfather. For the past eleven years I have worked as a collaborative projects coordinator for an early childhood coalition. I teach Conscious Fathering to new and expectant fathers and am the vice-chair of a group called Dads of Douglas County which hosts the annual Dad Days the week before Fathers’ day.
My experiences as a father and working in the field of early childhood policy and programs, I have come to realize that our children need male involvement. Men as well as women need to adjust their expectations of one another as they partner on the hard emotional work of making families work for children. This starts at birth, if not before. In Conscious Fathering classes, we teach the basic skills needed to care for an infant. We also emphasize the important task of establishing a relationship with their infants that is Consistent, Predictable, and Reliable. The teaching of these skills and pointing out this task are strategies to support fathers to ask important questions:
What is my self-definition of Fatherhood?
Am I an “assistant” or a “full partner” in parenting?
I can only imagine that for women the work of giving birth is a life changing experience and women must feel extremely vulnerable. For men, the birth of their child is a golden moment to bond and attach. Too often men interpret this moment as a time reserved for women, a time to become an assistant rather than a full partner. Women and Men working together can both support women, as New Birth Company is doing, and capture the golden moment for men to become life-long partners parenting their children.
